As you may already know, Covered California is offering a new insurance marketplace in which individuals and small groups can access health insurance. Coverage in this new marketplace began in 2014. Covered California will help individuals compare health insurance plans and choose the plan that will work best for their health and budget needs. The Federal Government will provide financial help to reduce costs for those qualifying on a sliding scale.
Small businesses will also be able to purchase competitively priced plans, offer their employees the ability to choose from a variety of plans and may also qualify for federal premium assistance. The Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) will provide small businesses with 50 or fewer full-time employees the ability to offer multiple health insurance plans to their employees.
Covered California is an independent arm of the state government that has been tasked with making the new market work for California’s consumers. Covered California is a State agency also responsible for implementing the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in California. It is overseen by a five-member board appointed by the Governor of California and the California State Legislature.
